The Knit Three Together Double Decrease (K3Tog)

About This Technique

The knit three together double decrease (k3tog) technique is used to remove two stitches at one time from your knitting and help shape your work. You will need to know how to decrease in order to knit hats, sweaters, and some mittens and gloves. This particular decrease technique has a right leaning slant and is used with the Slip Slip Slip Knit (sssk), which slants left, to keep your decrease balanced when doing shaping on a garment.

Technique Instructions

  • Prep: Work your pattern and stop two stitches before the stitch you want to decrease at.
  • Step 1: Insert your working needle into the front leg of the third stitch on your main needle, going knitwise, and through to the first stitch. They should cross each other forming an “X” with the working needle on bottom.
  • Step 2: Wrap the working yarn over the working needle on bottom and pull the working yarn through with the working needle through both stitches on the main needle. Pull towards you.
  • Step 3: Slip all the stitches off the main needle.
