How to Graft Garter Stitch

Graft Garter Stitch Knitting Technique

About This Technique

This technique is used to graft garter stitch edges together. The more traditional mattress stitch seam does not work as well for garter stitch knitting. This method of grafting edges together makes a seamless join, so it’s almost invisible.

Technique Instructions

  • Step 1: Take a darning or tapestry needle pre threaded with yarn and insert it into the bottom corner of one of the pieces you are seaming. Insert going from the wrong side to the right side of the fabric.
  • Step 2: Pull the yarn through, leaving about six inches, bring the needle around to the wrong side again. Insert the needle into the same hole you first put the needle through and pull tight. This will lock the yarn in place.
  • Step 3: Take your needle and insert into the same stitch on the other piece of fabric, going from the wrong side to the right side.
  • Step 4: Insert the needle into the first ridge stitch in the row above your previous insertion, and pull through, going from the bottom through the top.
  • Step 5: Insert the needle into the first ridge stitch on the opposite piece of fabric, and pull through, going from the bottom through the top. Pull tight.
  • Step 6: Insert the needle into the stitch between the two ridges, going from the right side to the wrong side.

Repeat steps 3 – 6 until you have seamed all the stitches together.
