How to Knit I-Cord

About This Technique

The I-Cord is a unique technique for creating knitted tubes. They can be thin or thick and are used as decoration or utility like a rope. They tend to have a lot of vertical stretch, but are useful as drawstrings in bags, applied to edges and borders as a finishing element, or in more artistic, abstract ways.

Technique Instructions

[wc_highlight color=”blue” class=””]NOTE: The following instructions are for using a double pointed needle (DPN)[/wc_highlight]

Step 1: After you have cast on your desired number of stitches, knit all stitches.
Step 2: Slide the stitches back to the beginning of the DPN.
Step 3: Bring your working yarn around the back and start knitting again. Make sure to pull the first stitch tightly, drawing the loop closed.

Repeat steps 1 & 2 until you’ve reached your desired length. Bind off and sew closed.
